So here we are three days into campaign season, and I have seen a single person declare candidacy for NISG senate positions. Props to Aaron Friel running for a CHAS seat.
The blog is partly to blame, but year after year senate struggles to get good students to run. The senate was recently reformed to have more competitive races with fewer seats, with the hope that contested seats would create a dialogue between senate and the students in the college.
Listen, reader. Get involved in senate. I understand that many students are busy, but the reality is that many of you are not. The minimum time commitment for being a senator is small, and new senators go through an orientation process to learn the rules and what they can do.
It's integral to a functioning student organization of any kind to recruit new members, and train them. It's vital to the survival of every student organization on campus! This year Speaker Eric Boisen has been urging the current senators to get people involved and find people to run, but he need our help. He needs YOUR help.
Having a functioning senate is critical to getting resources to students that deserve and merit them. It's critical to student groups that depend on senate allocations. If you're running or active involved in a student org, run for senate! If you're curious about how NISG works and what students can do to change the system, run for senate! If you care about maintaining all the things that make UNI a great place, RUN FOR SENATE.
Here's how to run for senate
1. Be a UNI student
2. Get candidate ballot from the NISG Office in the Union or by downloading it from : http://www.uni.edu/studentorgs/nisg/elections
3. Get 25 classmates from the college of your major to sign your petition by Friday at 5 p.m.
4. Get people to vote for you on MyUNIverse Feb 24/25
5. Show up
And that is really it! If for some reason you miss this week's deadline to get on the electronic ballot, YOU CAN STILL RUN.
All you have to do is get at least five classmates to write in your name on the ballot.
If you want to get involved, learn about how UNI works, and make a difference, do yourself and the University a favor by running for senate.
