Greenway-Beaves Platform Analysis

Quick Hits
Favorite Plank: "Create a Director of Volunteerism position within the NISG Executive Cabinet."
Least Favorite Plank: "Reform the NISG Senate to make it more transparent and productive for the University," due to its vagueness.
Unique Plank: "Partner with the university to create gender neutral restrooms around campus."
Theme: A laundry list of important issues with a few unique ideas, but short on details.

External Relations
Many points representing many important issues affecting UNI, but incredibly vague and short on details. The one innovative item is the create a Director of Volunteerism position on the cabinet. UNI has started to put more focus on volunteering over the last couple of years with the MLK Day of Service and Volunteer Tuesdays. A newfound focus on volunteering from the executive branch is a great way to give back to the community, and wouldn't cost a dime.

Campus Affairs
The ticket starts with "Going Green" and "Parking" sections that use a lot of words to say very little. "Expand the newly established Green Week" and "make the parking garage more useful for students" may show what the candidates value, but they say nothing about what the candidates plan to do. In the Safety section, they call for Public Safety to maintain sidewalks better, but I'm curious how they'd like to do that.

Department of Residence
The Department of Residence section hits on some good ideas: bring wireless to the dorms and help the DoR provide better incentives for meals, contracting, and more. The candidates have to show how these new ideas would be financially beneficial to the DoR. They might be able to do it, particularly with Union meal deals.

Maucker Union
The price tag on the Maucker Union section worries me. The ticket calls for staying open 24 hours a day during finals and for improving cell phone coverage at a time when the Union is shortening hours of services.

Student Organizations
The ticket puts their focus on starting groups rather than continuing current ones. Personally, I think this shift in traditional thought is great. Starting a student organization is a really hard thing to do, and NISG should put some work into making it easier.

Academic Affairs
The ticket wants to "revitalize the faculty assessment process." I agree it needs to be changed...how do they plan to do it?

Northern Iowa Student Government
More SUNI Daze and Freshman Council! This, I can get behind. The ticket also wants to reform NISG to make it more productive and transparent. I've been a huge advocate of this since I've been a Senator, I just want to know how they plan to do it.

Diversity
Gender neural bathrooms? Hmmm.
